Vanessa Smithers.

A storyteller, because in this life, everything’s a story, right?

Since the age of 6 (or maybe even earlier), the act of writing has been my safe haven, a place to land when thoughts, life, and emotions feel too heavy to carry. I write for freedom, safety, love, peace, and joy. I honestly can’t imagine my life without the ability to spill myself onto a page.

For the past 20+ years, I’ve worked in community advocacy, employment, youth work, and education, and through it all, I’ve been trusted with thousands of stories. Stories of shame, joy, growth, grief, survival, and becoming. Those experiences taught me what I now know for sure: our stories shape everything. They touch how we show up in our careers, our relationships, our identities, and our visions for the future.

Telling our stories fosters vulnerability, power, and clarity. It opens doors to communication, to confidence, to connection. Shame dies when exposed to the light, and when we learn to harness and own our stories, we move through the world with a different kind of freedom.

As a narrative consultant, my life’s work is to help people name, write, and shape the things they’ve been trying to say, on paper, online, and out loud. I help folks connect the dots, honor what they carry, and tell the truth about who they are. Whether it’s website copy, grant narratives, bios, brand messaging, pitch decks, or personal statements, if it requires a story, I’m all in.

We deserve to be heard and seen. That’s on everything.

Let the numbers speak for themselves…

Testimonials

Because I’m “sicker than your average” (word to Biggie), it’s awarded me incredible testimonials from clients. Proud is an understatement. You can check them out for yourself on LinkedIn, on this website, or feel free to email me. They’re always ready, and the stories attached are beautiful.

Vanessa understands how to package YOU. As a recruiter myself, I look at resumes and profiles all day long, which you would think would make me a pro at framing and summarizing my own skills. However, after being put back into the workforce after many years of solid employment, I was clueless. Her revisions not only cleaned up my profile, but I’ve noticed more hits and conversations around my potential next move.

“If not you, then who?” The Mission:

I’m dedicated to empowering individuals to create a strong and healthy foundation within themselves; one that propels them to do all the things, go all the places, and become exactly who they want to be in this lifetime. If not that, then what? If not you, then who?

Through narrative consulting, storytelling, speaking engagements, and workshops, I foster spaces that center truth, growth, grace, resilience, and self-discovery. I believe in the power of naming and owning our personal narratives, not just to drive change, but to restore confidence, clarity, and connection.

My mission is to equip folks with the language, tools, and courage to nurture generational wealth in non-traditional ways, by making room for joy, by honoring their truths, and by choosing peace as a practice.

You can “get it out the mud” and stay out. Keep ya shoes clean.

Not only are your resume skills top-tier, but so is your energy and commitment to pushing Black women to go after what’s theirs and to believe in themselves.
